I grew up in Pretoria in a family with a deep love for Africa and a passion for travel. For the past ten years, I have worked at the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), and I am incredibly proud to be part of an organisation dedicated to saving species, conserving habitats, and supporting people every single day. Building on more than 50 years of conservation impact, we are now driving a bold new strategy focused on nine priority landscapes across East and southern Africa. These areas have been identified for targeted conservation action, with the aim of creating strongholds for biodiversity, climate change adaptation, and ecological resilience in an ever-changing world. Outside of my work, I find joy in being outdoors and staying active through running. I am also the proud mother of a beautiful twelve-year-old boy, and I hope to instill in him a deep sense of hope and appreciation for our extraordinary country.

We are celebrating eleven years of RPC, and this will be my eighth year participating in this incredibly successful fundraising event. RPC is truly a life-changing experience—the breathtaking mountain scenery, the strong sense of camaraderie, and the deep feeling of achievement all make it something very special to be part of. I firmly believe that every individual can and should have a positive impact on our natural world. RPC offers a powerful way to connect with nature while raising vital funds for conservation. It is also, without a doubt, one of the most rewarding and memorable weekends you can spend in the mountains.

I was born in Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada. It's a little town on the west coast just outside of Vancouver. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to live in the US and Austria.. I have lived in Basel, Switzerland for the past 16 years with my husband. We have a 14 year-old daughter, Emma, who has developed our love for travel and inspires us to do what we can to make the world a better place for her to explore and live in.  We want her to think of herself as a world citizen and try to set that example—not just for her sake but for that of future generations

I love running, biking and hiking. I've completed several half marathons over the years and even a full marathon. I have also been lucky enough to participate in Rhino Peak the last three years

Reason for taking challenge:

Since 2019, I’ve been volunteering with Wildlife ACT, returning year after year—sometimes twice—and even sharing the experience with my husband and daughter. Working alongside monitors, park staff, anti-poaching teams, and vets has shown me what conservation really looks like on the ground, and just how important it is. That’s why I’m taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge. I believe in leading by example—that actions matter, and that even small acts can inspire change. Most of all, I want to show my daughter, Emma, that together we can make a real difference. Through this challenge, I hope not only to reach my fundraising goal, but also to raise awareness for Wildlife ACT’s incredible work and encourage others to get involved—because every contribution counts. I wouldn’t exactly call myself a sports enthusiast - unless hiking regularly and squeezing in home workouts daily makes the cut :) What I may lack in traditional “sportiness,” I make up for in determination. When a challenge is put in front of me, I don’t back down. I commit, push through and make sure I cross the finish line.

Reason for taking challenge:

I came close last year, but the mountain had other plans. Severe weather meant we couldn’t reach the summit. This year, I’m returning with unfinished business - more determined than ever to make it to the top. It also marks a milestone year for me, as part of my 30th birthday goals. Pushing myself is one thing, but doing it for a meaningful cause rooted in wildlife conservation and sustainability on a broader scale makes it even more worthwhile.

We live in a tiny town, Creighton, a place where you don't have much choice then to be outdoors, which we absolutely love. We are blessed to be apart of a small farming community and do contracting work for farmers around the Midlands area. We are a family of 4, and are constantly surrounded by our animals who are all part of our family!

Last year was the first time taking on Rhino Peak Challenge and doing the Giants Cup Trail together. Both event we thoroughly enjoyed, making us want to do more and to make more memories! Calvin enjoys riding motorbikes, which our son Matthew is closely following his foot steps and I love hiking and would do anything to be on the mountains more than in the office! We both need to set these challenges for ourselves to motivate us to get fit and work towards something.

Reason for taking challenge:

Last year was our first time being apart of this amazing challenge. It was such a memorable weekend spent with like minded people. Mother nature had plans of her own and didn't allow us to summit the peak. We hiked through numerous lightning storms and crazy winds, which was an adventure on its own, but the call was made for everyone's safety to stop just below. So this year we had to come back to give it a solid tick off out bucket list. BUT besides doing it for the physical challenge for ourselves, we doing it for what even more important and that is raising the funds for our wildlife! The ones that don't have a voice and don't get heard unless we get involved and cry for them. Raising funds in today's time has proven so difficult!!! But with every bit that each person contributes it all adds up and helps in a huge way as seen in the past.

About me:

Having grown up in a very active and adventurous family, I fell in love with nature and the mountains at a young age. I am happiest when deep in the mountains somewhere wild and remote. I am a conservationist, dedicated to biodiversity awareness, connecting people to nature, and protecting landscapes and species through my work at the Endangered Wildlife Trust. I am also a foodie who loves baking and making up dessert recipes. I live in Cape Town with my husband and our two crazy Jack Russells.

Sporting bio:

All things mountaineering! I have been a rock climber for the last 19 years, mainly doing Traditional and Sport climbing, and my husband and I are regularly climbing on the cliff faces of Table Mountain, or in the Cederberg on Wolfberg and Tafelberg, Truitjieskraal, or wherever there is good rock. I am a hiker, and I try to get out and do some trail running most weekends. In the summer months, I spend my time kloofing, also known as 'canyoneering', through some of the Cape’s secluded kloofs. And of course, I walk our Jack Russells, Hansel and Lappies, daily.

Reason for taking challenge:

I am a passionate conservationist and have worked in South African Conservation NGOs for over a decade. I understand the constant need to raise funds for meaningful and impactful work. I took part in the Rhino Peak Challenge for the first time last year and was completely hooked by the experience, the mountains, the people, and the purpose behind it all. I am incredibly excited to be taking part again this year for a second time and to continue supporting conservation through this amazing challenge. We are facing increasing environmental pressures, biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, and growing human-wildlife conflict globally. And in South Africa, these environmental issues are no different. There is an urgent and ongoing need to raise awareness and support the conservation of species and ecosystems in our beautiful and biodiverse country. And if helping to raise the profile of endangered species means taking part in RPC 2026, then I am once again, all in!

About me:

Jess: I’m a wife, a mother, and a History teacher at St John’s D.S.G. I’m proudly South African, and having lived abroad for three years, I can honestly say there is no place like home. I love our country’s rich diversity, unique heritage, complex history and, of course, our extraordinary wildlife. Growing up on a farm instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature and a lasting respect for the environment and the incredible wildlife we are privileged to share it with. As a History teacher, I spend my days encouraging young people to value and learn from the past. I believe that preserving our natural heritage is just as important, so that future generations inherit not only the stories of South Africa, but also the landscapes and wildlife that make our country so remarkable. Sarah: I'm a wife, proud mom to two very spoiled furbabies, and originally from Pietermaritzburg, where I attended The Wykeham Collegiate. I'm a Counselling Psychologist working primarily with children, teenagers and young adults, and together with my husband, I'm the manager at Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse in the heart of Kamberg. Living in the Drakensberg has given me a deep appreciation for the mountains and the incredible wildlife that calls them home. When I'm not working, you'll usually find me out on the trails, breathing in the fresh mountain air and soaking up the beauty of nature. The mountains are where I feel most at peace—they truly are food for my soul. In 2023, my life changed forever when I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. I underwent chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and specialised treatment sessions. That journey taught me to never take my health, my body or the privilege of being outdoors for granted. Every step I take on a trail is a reminder of how far I've come and how precious life really is.

Jess: I’ve always loved being active and challenging myself physically. I competed as a provincial gymnast before discovering CrossFit, which has been a huge part of my life for the past 12 years. More recently, I’ve rediscovered my love for trail running and recently completed the Oxpecker Ultra. Whether it’s in the gym or on the trails, I enjoy pushing my limits, embracing new challenges and spending time outdoors. Sarah: Growing up, I competed in athletics, cross country, hockey and basketball throughout my school years. Since leaving school, my passion for movement has continued through trail running, CrossFit, HYROX and powerlifting. More recently, I've found my greatest joy on the trails. There's something incredibly special about pushing myself in the mountains while being surrounded by nature. Following my breast cancer journey, sport has taken on an even deeper meaning. It's no longer just about performance or reaching the finish line—it's about celebrating what my body is capable of, building resilience, and embracing every opportunity to move.

Jess: The Rhino Peak Challenge is an incredible opportunity to combine a personal challenge with a cause that truly matters. South Africa’s wildlife is part of our identity, and protecting it is a responsibility we all share. As both a mother and a teacher, I often think about the legacy we leave for the next generation. If we don’t act now, what will be left for our children to experience and cherish? I’m honoured to be part of a challenge that raises awareness and supports the conservation of one of our country’s most iconic and endangered animals, and I hope to inspire others to play their part too. Sarah: Taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge with my friend Jess is about so much more than reaching the summit. It's an opportunity to support the conservation of South Africa's endangered wildlife while challenging myself on one of the country's most iconic mountain hikes. The Midlife Crises

About me:

We are The Midlife Crises. Five men, one mountain, and a combined age that really should know better. The name arrived unprompted when one of us asked the question that has since become our motto: why else would five middle-aged men try to run up a mountain? Swarovski binoculars were mentioned. Motorbikes were considered. We chose the Drakensberg, which is cheaper and marginally less likely to end a marriage. On paper we look reassuringly credible. Gareth Tate manages the Endangered Wildlife Trusts's (EWT) savannah landscape, and ties together a conservation team into a unified entity. John Davies manages the Birds of Prey Unit, who focus on the conservation of vultures and a host of other threatened raptors, including Pel's Fishing Owl, Martial Eagle, Bateleur and more. Cole du Plessis has spent his career chasing African Wild Dog and the continent's other threatened carnivores. Darren Pietersen is our resident scientist: pangolin specialist, author, and a man who leads bioblitzes across Africa to find species nobody knew were there — which means if any of us collapses on the summit, at least it'll be properly documented. And Keenan Houareau brings the hospitality, as well as a true passion for birds and conservation, with years spent in the Lowveld, Mozambique and Botswana, and now managing Sungulwane Lodge in the Zuka Private Game Reserve. Impressive, no? Now watch us try to run.

Sporting bio:

Not one of us is a true runner. We want to be very clear about that up front, so that nobody is disappointed later. We are, however, a group of guys who have spent decades on foot in the African bush — walking, tracking, surveying, and generally moving at a pace dictated by whatever we've stopped to look at. It's excellent conditioning for a nine-hour day in the mountains, right up until someone tells you that you're supposed to do it quickly. So our preparation rests on three pillars: stubbornness, an unusually high tolerance for discomfort, and a group chat of genuinely world-class quality. The plan is simple. Don't get injured. Don't come last. And under no circumstances let the other four hear you complaining.

Reason for taking challenge:

Here's the serious bit, and we do mean it. We all spend our working lives at the sharp end of conservation, which means we know precisely how hard it is to find the money that keeps rangers in the field, keeps vultures off poisoned carcasses, and keeps wild dogs alive for another year. Rhino Peak is one of the rare events where the suffering is directly proportional to the good it does. Every rand raised goes straight to people doing the unglamorous, essential work on the ground. We're doing it as a team because five people can raise more than one, because the mountain is friendlier with company, and because not one of us was willing to be the first to pull out. So, back the crisis. If ours ends up funding the protection of vultures, wild dogs, rhinos and the wild places they need, it'll be the most productive midlife meltdown in recorded history. The legs are ours. The impact is yours.

Hi, I’m lauren. By day, I’m a corporate banker. By night (and most weekends), I’m usually found somewhere outdoors, preferably where there’s fresh air, a mountain, a river and absolutely no cell phone signal. Having spent so much time in the outdoors, I have been lucky enough to spend time enjoying many of the endangered species which EWT work with. An incredible foundation protecting some of Africa’s most iconic species. I’m excited to have the opportunity to fundraise for EWT to continue doing their incredible work!

Haha! Not much to boast about on this front! AI reckons “I’ve never been the person chasing trophies or records”. Hurtful! This will be my third Rhino Peak Challenge. Other that that, I recently completed the Huemul Circuit in Argentina in 4 days (standard, not fast before you look it up). Other than that, many Midmars, a few Dusis and half marathons.

About me:

I was born and raised in Kyalami, which engrained a deep love for horses, nature, and Africa in me. As the daughter of legendary African travel buffs, I have safaris, conservation, and travel in my blood. I was practically raised on safari and have loved every minute of my life because of it! I am an environmental & corporate lawyer by profession, but my love for the African bush and my passion for making people happy brought me to working in the travel industry, in my family's business. Our company is called Wild Frontiers, and we are a specialist tour operator and DMC, specialising in safaris to East & Southern Africa. Some random facts about me: I am a keen birder, I have done the theory part of my FGASA Level 1, I own two adorable dogs and one horse, I am marrying a professional golfer in Jan 2027, I love astrology (my star sign is Aries), and my dream is to build my own safari camp and live in the bush with my husband, dogs and horses!

I have done the Pirates 21km once, Vic Falls Half Marathon twice, and the Oxpecker Trail Run three times. Other than running, I love doing anything active and I am a competitive horse rider.

Reason for taking challenge:

Growing up, I always knew I was destined for something greater than myself, and with a love for nature and Africa, I always knew that was conservation. So I studied environmental law because I wanted to make a difference. Life put me on a different path in the travel industry, but I know that this industry can make meaningful, tangible positive impact, especially on communities and the environment. My parents, through Wild Frontiers, often showed me as a kid the incredible things people can do when we work together, to uplift communities and protect the environment. I am finally in a position to put my passion and plans into action, and taking part in the 2026 Rhino Peak Challenge is my first step in creating the meaningful impact I always know I was destined for.

I am a son, brother, husband, and father. Although I've never formally been diagnosed, I'm pretty sure I have some form of functional ADHD. I can't sit still for long periods of time and need to keep my mind busy with a multitude of things. As a result, I wear several hats: 1. My main source of income comes from my own business, africaMASSIVE. In short, we do conferencing, events, and travel, with a focus on ecology related and academic projects. I am a first responder in the greater Midrand (Johannesburg) area and also share the knowledge as a Stop the Bleed instructor (https://www.stopthebleed.org/) which is accredited through the American College of Surgeons, and is owned by the American Department of the Defense. 3. Sharing the spotlight with trauma medicine, is my passion for security and law enforcement. I am currently the SCF/CPF Operations & Patrols coordinator for Midrand Sector 5. I’m someone who loves travel, adventure, and the natural world — I’ve been lucky enough to explore the Amazon jungle and I’ve watched birds of paradise perform their mating dances in the forests of West Papua. I’m passionate about wildlife, staying active, and living a healthy, nature-connected life wherever I go. I am also very keen on giving back to the natural world from which I get so much joy.

Sporting bio:

I think I peaked athletically when I made it to the semi-finals of my hockey club beer pong tournament back in 2002. Haha, but in all seriousness, while I may not be in the same league as some of the ultra-runners who’ve tackled this event, health and fitness have always been an important part of my life. Whether it’s time in the gym, a run, or anything that gets me moving, I’ve always found joy in staying active. I naturally prefer being off the beaten track — give me a trail run over a road run any day. Some of my most challenging (and memorable) experiences have been the three Mnweni Marathons I’ve completed. It’s a truly magnificent but demanding event, where I’ve faced it all: breathtaking scenery, snow, rain, sun, and ITB.

I thought I was getting a free weekend in the Drakensberg – now they’re telling me I have to run up a mountain and raise a bunch of money ??. Just joking, in all seriousness, this type of challenge fits my personality and passions perfectly. I love trail running and hiking, I love being out in nature and in the Berg, and I have a deep appreciation for wildlife and wild places. Spending time in natural environments with wild animals brings me a lot of joy, and the opportunity to take part in this event while supporting the incredible work that the beneficiaries are doing is an absolute privilege. If I can contribute, even in a small way, to protecting endangered animals, then every step will be worth it.

About me:

I grew up in a small suburb close to Durban. Growing up, I developed a love and passion for nature and our animals. After matriculating in 2018, I studied Nature conservation at Centurion Academy, gaining a diploma in 2021. I’ve always had an eye for adventure and took up running after school. I’ve completed multiple Half Marathons and have 2 full Marathons under my belt. This will be my second time participating in RPC and I can’t wait to be on that start line!

The first time I did the rhino peak challenge was to support my wife who signed up, knowing she's afraid of heights I knew she could use all the moral support she could get, this time it's to see what I can accomplish. Curiosity and adventure have always been a big part of who I am. I enjoy exploring South Africa's incredible landscapes, hiking mountain trails, camping under the stars and discovering places that remind us just how extraordinary nature can be. I'm also a registered beekeeper, and working with bees has given me an even greater appreciation for the vital role every species plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems. When I'm not outdoors, you'll usually find me watching rugby or football, spending time with family and friends, or planning my next adventure. I believe growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, and that's a mindset I try to bring into every part of my life. For me, the reward has never been reaching the summit, it's earning it. I thrive on challenges that demand resilience, preparation and perseverance. From completing trail runs in Hartbeespoort to standing on the summits of Sentinel Peak (3,165 m / 10,384 ft) and Cathedral Peak (3,004 m / 9,856 ft), every adventure has reinforced the belief that growth begins where comfort ends. The Rhino Peak Challenge is the next step in that journey, combining my passion for the outdoors with the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to protecting South Africa's wildlife.

Reason for taking challenge:

I've always believed that we have a responsibility to leave the world better than we found it. South Africa's wildlife is part of our identity, but protecting it requires more than admiration, it requires action. By taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge, I'm turning my love for the outdoors into an opportunity to support conservation where it matters most. My goal is to raise at least R20,000 to help protect rhinos, vultures and cranes through the incredible work of the Endangered Wildlife Trust, Wildlife ACT and the Bearded Vulture Recovery Programme. I'm Shayna Wolhuter. I'm a twenty-two-year-old Ballito local, tutor for grade R to 3, and I'm studying for a BA in Psychology and Communication Sciences. I love running, being outdoors and conservation. And I'm excited to inspire more people to move and explore nature. My dream is to work is to eventually work in the environmental conservation / marine conservation side .

I'm a runner/swimmer from Ballito who loves being outdoors and staying active. I usually run along the promenade or around myestate, and I enjoy pushing my endurance while keeping things fun, I’ve run just over 15km at highest and constantly pushing for longer runs . I also often go to Durban north swimming pool on Saturdays with family and do some training there with aiming to 70 to 100 laps at least .I'm passionate about conservation and love any chance to connect with nature through movement. My goal is to keep building my distance and strength while using running as a way to support causes I care about.

Reason for taking challenge:

I'm taking on this challenge because conservation matters deeply to me. I want to show that when we push ourselves to do hard things, like training for a long run, we build the same resolve that's needed to tackle big issues. If people come together, even small acts can add up to real change. I hope my run inspires others and the kids I tutor to back the causes they believe in and make space for nature in their everyday choices as they are our future and the animals future too .

About me:

I am JC Lamprecht, a Christian, husband, father, anti-poaching operator, and co-founder of UNTITLED Training Group, specializing in Close Quarter Survival (CQS). I am also the current EFC Light Heavyweight Champion. My life is built around one principle: to use the abilities God has given me in service of others and in the protection of His creation. For more than a decade, I have dedicated my life to the anti-poaching industry, working alongside game reserves, field rangers, and conservation teams throughout Southern Africa. My role extends far beyond training with firearms. I have always been a sporty person who enjoyed trying all sorts of activities. The running bug bit in 2008, when I joined Hilton Harriers running club. Since then I have participated in countless races, both trail and road. Some of my greatest highlights have been completing Mount Aux Sources, The Golden Gate Challenge, Mweni Marathon, Sani Stagger, Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, and countless road races - marathons and half marathons - No, not Comrades... yet ;)... I absolutely love how running can bring people from all walks of life together in such a unique way.

Reason for taking challenge:

I grew up spending holidays in some of South Africa's most incredible places, where we had the privilege of experiencing an abundance of wildlife, both on land and in the ocean. From a young age, I developed a deep passion for wildlife and the extraordinary diversity of species found in our country. It has been a joy to watch my son discover the wonders of our wildlife, and I hope to nurture the same love and appreciation for nature in him. Over the years, I have been involved in various conservation initiatives, all of which I have found deeply rewarding. Although my career is centred around working with people, I have always had a profound love for nature. During my university studies, I intentionally chose additional courses that gave me opportunities to travel, explore the natural world, and become involved in conservation. I was also fortunate to volunteer with Wildlife ACT at Manyoni Game Reserve, where I gained invaluable hands-on experience working with wildlife. It was a truly life-changing experience. The Rhino Peak Challenge has always been on my bucket list, although I have found the fundraising target a little daunting. This year, I'll be relying on the generosity of my wonderful friends and family to help me reach my goal ;) It would be an incredible privilege to participate in such an inspiring event that raises both funds and awareness for wildlife conservation. I come from an adventure racing and mountain biking background. I have always enjoyed multi-sport and find trail running to be very enjoyable. I have completed 3 Dusi Canoe Marathons, 1 Comrades (so far) and am heading towards a SkyRun100 in November. Probably the most mentionable sporting achievement is having completed the first ever Obstacle Course Race in Antarctica!

I like the idea of being a part of something bigger than yourself, and in doing so finding that community that stands alongside you. I am always game for a challenge, and RPC presents two of those, but the cause is worth the effort. Both vultures and rhino's have something awe inspiring about them! They may just take your breath away a little more than the mountain air does!

Haha! While I’m a runner, I’m not a Comrades Marathon runner yet. I initially started running just to keep fit, but over time I fell in love with the sport. Since then, I’ve completed several races, including 10km events and half marathons. One day, I hope to proudly say that I have earned 15+ Comrades Marathon medals. I also used to be a good soccer player, and I still believe that if I were given the opportunity to step onto a soccer field today, I could still score a hat-trick!

As Rhino Peak celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, I felt inspired to be part of this remarkable milestone and contribute to the ongoing fight to protect one of South Africa's most iconic Big Five animals. To support this important cause, I decided to challenge myself by participating in the event and raising funds that will directly contribute to conservation efforts. For me, this is about more than completing a personal challenge; it is about playing a role in preserving our natural heritage and promoting environmental sustainability for future generations. Rhinos are an important part of our ecosystem and biodiversity, and their survival is closely linked to the health of our environment. Born in SA, lived a few years outside of the country and then came back to study and work. I am an outdoor fanatic with an addiction to trails and the steeper, the better. I'm also really interested in the intersection of where sports such as running can have an impact that gives back to the communities and organisations that allow us to enjoy the outdoors in a sustainable way. I've worked on a few projects that included an apparel project that donated profits back to welfare organisations, took part in the Walking Home Project during the community shoutout, and during Covid went off the rails and decided to train to beat the world record for most burpees in 24h to raise funding - that did not go well at all. In terms of work, I have a strong drive to have an impact.

Sporting bio:

I've run a few ultras, with the longest being the 100miler at MacMac. Training for the SkyRun 100 in 2022 tipped me over the edge for long distance events. What I really enjoy is a long solo run that probably tips into the realm of 'I should have planned more for this'. This includes solos of Mweni, Mt Aux-Sources, Giant's Castle and more kms than I can count around the Magalies and Clarens.

For a personal reason - the peak is just so incredibly iconic and the opportunity to experience it will be phenomenal. For altruistic reasons - this project and what it works towards is incredibly important and if I can use my running to help it in any way, how can I not step up? Every little bit helps.

Hi! I'm Channen, i am a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Nature Conservation at TUT in Pretoria. I grew up in Uganda and Kenya which most likley prompted by interest and passion for wildlife and research. My main interests lie in animal physiology (endocrine and gut microbial) and how its affected by climatic changes, but happy to delve into ecology and diet too! In my free time i am usually training for a race or finding decent pizza spots with friends.

I am an avid runner. Especially trail running. Any opportunity to get out into the mountains, I'm there! I have done many sports since i was child, my favourites include rowing and hockey. I love keeping active and feel lost and frustrated at the end of a working day when i have no exercise planned.

I am a huge supporter of conservation and preserving our species and their environment. As i work in academia, I am aware how important this is becoming but, also, how difficult it is to find funding. Let's not forget my love for the mountains. I had the privilege of being an ambassador in 2025. It was a truly inspiring event and loved every moment of the event. However we never actually managed to summit the peak due to dangerous a thunderstorm and lightning as well has very strong winds. I hope to reach the summit this year and in so doing raise more funding towards the great cause of protecting vultures in our country.

For me, Rhino Peak isn’t just about the climb. It’s about protecting the wild places we’re lucky enough to still have and supporting the incredible work done by the Endangered Wildlife Trust — people on the ground fighting every day to protect species that don’t have a voice. Let’s be honest: I’m not the fastest up that mountain I question my life choices about halfway up every year And by the time I reach the top, I’ve usually made at least three promises to “never do this again” …and yet, I keep coming back. Why? Because the discomfort lasts a few hours — but the impact of what we’re supporting lasts generations. South Africa’s wildlife is under real threat, and if we don’t step up, future generations might only see these incredible animals in books or on screens. That’s just not good enough. So I climb. I sweat. I complain a little. But most importantly — I raise funds to help protect something that truly matters. I love South Africa. Not in a passive, flag-waving kind of way, but in a deep, chest-tightening, this-place-is-in-my-bones kind of way. The landscapes, the people, the wildlife, the chaos, the beauty. All of it. This country is extraordinary, and I never want to take a single part of it for granted. But there's one thought that genuinely keeps me up at night: the idea that a child growing up in South Africa today might one day live in a version of this country that no longer has rhinos in it. I can't sit with that thought. I refuse to. The rhino is one of the most ancient, powerful, and magnificent animals to have ever walked this earth, and it walks our earth, our soil, in the country I love more than anywhere else in the world. The idea that we could lose them - not to nature, not to time, but to greed and poaching is something that fills me with a sadness and an anger I struggle to put into words. So I'm doing something about it. The Rhino Peak Challenge is not the easiest thing I've ever signed up for, but it shouldn't be easy. The rhino's survival isn't easy either. The rangers and conservationists fighting for them every single day don't get an easy road, and the least I can do is take on a hard one in their honour. I've run Comrades four times. I've crossed the finish line at Two Oceans. I know what it means to dig deep and keep moving when everything in you wants to stop. I'll bring every bit of that same fight to this challenge because the rhino deserves nothing less. This is for South Africa. For the wild, untameable, irreplaceable South Africa that I love with everything I have. Let's make sure it stays that way.
