I love running, biking and hiking. I've completed several half marathons over the years and even a full marathon. I have also been lucky enough to participate in Rhino Peak the last two years.

Reason for taking challenge:

Since 2019, I’ve been volunteering with Wildlife ACT. I’ve returned year after year, sometimes even twice in one year, and have had the privilege of sharing this experience with both my husband and daughter. Volunteering alongside dedicated monitors, park staff, anti-poaching units, and reserve vets has given me a real understanding of what conservation looks like on the ground—and how vital this work truly is. That’s why I’m taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge. I believe in leading by example. That actions speak louder than words. That every act of kindness sparks another. And most importantly, I want to show my daughter, Emma, that by working together, we really can make a difference. Through this challenge, my goal is not only to reach my fundraising target—but to raise awareness for Wildlife ACT’s incredible work. I want to encourage others to get involved in any way they can. I grew up in Pretoria and come from a family that loves Africa and loves to travel. I have worked for the EWT for 9 years and am extremely proud to be part of an organisation that works day in and day out to save species, conserve habitats and benefit people. After over 50 years of conservation impact, we are taking on a bold new strategy. We have identified nine priority landscapes across East and southern Africa that will benefit from targeted conservation action, to become a haven for conservation, climate change adaptation and ecological resilience in a rapidly changing world. Our family is Ed, Isabel and my running partner, Phillip.  Our running team has recently been joined by Robyn, who shares our love of nature.  We represent an intentional legacy of nature lovers.  Growing up on a farm teaches you appreciation and respect for your animals, the land and its people.  It's something Ed and I work at in our suburban home where sustainability is key, you are part of a community, do your part.  We have been blessed with a lovely plantation, with sections of natural forest nearby and a stream runs through it.  Everything is solved with a run in the forest with the dogs and, in Robyn’s case, a run on the farm past the cows.  Robyn will be studying conservation ecology in the coming year and is excited to start this journey by contributing to this wonderful initiative that is the Rhino Peak Challenge.

You can do anything on a Kalahari farm, bar swim! It's this freedom of expression that allows you the ability to appreciate any sport may it be for the jol or competitive. Phillip enjoys being part of a team but also the joy of individual sports and endeavours. Robyn loves all sports and is always up for a good challenge.

Reason for taking challenge:

Returning from Weenen Nature Reserve, one of many trips where Phillip has spent time in nature, he spoke of an unforgettable weekend. Robyn also spoke so enthusiastically of her time volunteering in the bush. That's the impact of nature when you experience the multiplicity of the web of life. Though, these experiences were different. They were facilitated by passionate conservationists and generous donors. They do it because they LOVE IT! Such generosity of spirit. Education and awareness of our diversely beautiful country is becoming more important as so much is being eroded by the Spirit of Greed and the lack of knowledge. The conservationists at Wildlife ACT are fighting this scourge daily and they need our help. The Rhino Peak Challenge fundraising conservation initiative, now in its 10th year, allows Phillip, Robyn and me the privilege of trail running in the picturesque Drakensburg, to ascend the Rhino's Peak. It also gives us the opportunity to reach out, work hard and offer something back for which we have received so generously.

Born in Zimbabwe. Living in S.Africa most of my life. Grown up with sport and an outdoor life. Swimming was my first fairly serious sport, but then I found the sport of Squash. Excelled from a young age and stuck to my dream of playing professionally on the world tour. As soon as school finished I embarked on the PSA World Tour for 12 years. Privileged to have played Squash all over the world. During my sporting career I also had a passion for endangered wildlife conservation. Wanting to make an even bigger impact for endangered wildlife and community upliftement, I established our own Non-Profit Company. My daughter Sarah who is a vet, is an important part of our NPC and we are making inroads to assist in niche projects on the wildlife, rural community and bio diversity side. Melissa: I have always enjoyed maintaining a level of fitness and health, more recently with hiking – I find it both challenging and therapeutic.

Meg: As a child, my parents would take us hiking every weekend in the Kogelberg Mountains above Kleinmond. We absolutely loved it and as a teenager, we enjoyed a little wooden cabin in the Cederberg Mountains (I have to confess, not much hiking but more sleeping was done). Currently, I am based along the Garden Route and exploring the George mountains have brought back this childhood passion of hiking. All things mountaineering: I have been a rock climber for the last 19 years, and regularly climb with my husband on Table Mountain or the Cederberg (wherever there is suitable rock!) I regularly hike - the more off-trail the better. I trail run most weekends and LOVE running downhill. In summer I do kloofing (canyoneering) in many of the Cape's secluded kloofs. And I walk the dogs daily - does that count?

Reason for taking challenge:

I am a passionate conservationist and have been working in the NGO space for over a decade. I understand the need to constantly fundraise for the important work that we all do. I want to help in whatever way I can and if it means hiking in the Drakensberg then I am in! Globally, we are facing geopolitical instability and increasing pressures on biodiversity - there is an urgent need for greater awareness around species and habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. Through taking part in RPC, I am able to play a part in raising that awareness and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity.

I spent part of my childhood in Katima Mulilo on Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, where I learned how to tiger fish and spent most days covered in mud – usually in my underpants. These days I’m a little more clothed, but no less adventurous. I work as a Leads Associate and recharge by cold dipping in the ocean, going full tilt at F45, and dancing barefoot under the stars at festivals. I’m a free spirit with a paintbrush in one hand, a bird book in the other, and a thriving collection of houseplants plotting a quiet takeover in the background. In another life? Probably a monkey. Obviously.

Whether it’s gym, trail races, or multi-day charity cycles through Namibia, I’ve always loved a good physical challenge – especially if it includes beautiful views and the occasional stumble. I’ve taken part in Challenge4ACause, the Knysna Forest Race, as well as countless runs and hikes around Cape Town. Movement keeps me grounded, energised, and alive (preferably with a good playlist).

I’ve had my eye on the Rhino Peak Challenge since it first launched but thought I’d join “next year.” When a fellow participant had to step down, I offered to take her place – and suddenly “next year” became now. I’m nervous, but also wildly excited to push my limits alongside an inspiring group of humans.

Having previously raised funds for rhino conservation through Challenge4ACause, I’ve seen the impact these initiatives can make. Reason for taking challenge:

As a senior staff member of the EWT I want to take on this challenge to both kead by example in my work environment and challenge myself personally. I am confident that with some focused training I will be able to complete the Rhino Peak challenge in a competitive time. Who knows, it may become a regular annual challenge for me. And of course I want to raise as much funding for the EWT as possible!

I’m a 28-year-old daughter & mother, born and raised in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands – a region that shaped my deep love for nature and the outdoors. Surrounded by diverse landscapes growing up, I naturally gravitated towards exploring the environment, which eventually sparked my passion for hiking and outdoor education. I’m an Environmental Scientist by qualification, with a strong passion for sustainability, rural development and biodiversity conservation. I currently work as a Project Coordinator at Rhino Africa where as part of our CSR wildlife conservation isn’t just something we do for the books – it’s part of our DNA. Prior to this, i was an environmental education intern at WESSA, where I played a key role in equipping school learners with knowledge and skills around biodiversity and sustainability. I’ve since led numerous hikes for youth as part of the President’s Award, helping them connect with nature while building confidence and leadership skills. When I’m not out on a trail, you’ll probably find me debating thought-provoking topics or singing with friends over a glass of beer. I believe in living with purpose, staying curious and using every opportunity to inspire change – one step at a time.

My sporting journey began in high school, where I was an active participant in both netball and soccer. While I’ve always been a passionate soccer fan – and still am to this day – my true sporting love emerged after school: HIKING. I am Malibongwe Sibiya, and I am the Wildlife ACT Southern Berg Project Vulture Monitor. My daily work involves the monitoring of Endangered and Critically endangered Vultures in Southern Drakensberg and Lesotho. My work also includes the monitoring of Bearded Vulture nests during the breeding season and the monitoring and management of Long-term camera trap surveys in the Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site and surroundings, I also help with the Environmental Education and awareness programs with local schools and providing of safe food for the endangered vultures at the Mzimkulu Vulture Hide and Safe Feeding Site in Underberg.

About me:

I’m a husband, a dad, and have a sense of humour that seems to cut through all of me, no matter how professional I should be. I am a creative who spends most days behind a computer in Johannesburg, which makes getting outdoors feel that much more valuable. I try to get to the mountains whenever I can, but it’s not nearly as often as I’d like. Still, every time I manage to hit the trails, it’s always worth it. Doesn’t matter how bad the day’s been, being out there just resets things. I once heard or saw on an IG reel that you will never regret going on a run. My family is everything. I want to be a good role model for my kids, to show them that it’s okay, and we should all try to chase hard things, as well as that doing something uncomfortable can lead to something meaningful. Conservation is a big part of my extended family, and I’ve always felt like I needed to step into that space too. We weren’t here first, and we won’t be here last, but we are here now, so we may as well take better care of what’s around us. Fun Fact: I have some weird superstitious sports habits. I keep certain pairs of socks for specific days because they’ve got good energy. And yes, my shoelaces get tied and tucked in specific ways before certain runs. Call it weird. Or just habit. Either way, it helps me.

Sporting bio:

I love all things to do with activity and getting out there. I’ve played hockey for about 20 years straight, never missing a season. I used to be pretty decent on a mountain bike, it was a huge part of my life for a long time. And while I don’t train as much as I should these days, running has managed to stick around. I’ve done a bunch of halfs, a couple of 32s, a few full marathons, and an ultra trail. I once accidentally won a short trail race too… which was a bit wild, but very cool. My biggest running challenge so far was MAD2Run in 2021, a relay from Joburg to Cape Town. One of the toughest shifts was in the Tankwa: midday heat, heavy wind, and a seriously tired body after days on the road. It wasn’t fun, but it was brilliant. Heading into Rhino Peak, I just want to be fit enough to give it the beans when I need to, but still comfortable enough to take a moment, breathe, and be fully present in the mountains.

Reason for taking challenge:

This challenge is about doing more than talking. Likes and shares don’t help a rhino that’s being poached, or vultures that have been poisoned. But raising funds, actually showing up, does. If I can do that by running up a mountain, then I’m in. One of my best mates (grown men should really say that more often), Henry Cock, who’s also doing the challenge, is one of those people who just commits and makes it happen. It’s a quality I deeply admire. He asked, and I said yes. Simple as that. We should definitely do this. There wasn’t some big click or emotional turning point. It may sound odd, but sometimes something just feels correct. No second-guessing. No “should I or shouldn’t I.” Just a quiet, matter-of-fact yes. Like it was always going to happen. And that is what the Rhino Peak Challenge is to me, something that is correct.

About me:

From a small village in Leicestershire in the UK, I've grown up around wildlife; looking for it on daily walks, and identifying what's flying above my head and running around at my feet. I can't imagine my life where wildlife conservation and the great outdoors aren't at the soul of my focus. I was lucky enough to meet many amazing people from Wildlife ACT in August 2023 on my volunteering trip at the Southern Berg Vulture Project, and have irrevocably fallen in love with the Drakensberg area since then.

Sporting bio:

Avid solo hiker, camper and woodland explorer. I've completed both my Bronze and Silver DofE awards. Love spending my fitness time in the outdoors, from leisurely paddleboarding and kayaking, to hikes such as Snowdon, Tryfan and Bamboo mountain or 10k trail runs. The last few months I've been focusing on more strength training at the gym with rowing machines, stair master and treadmill exercises.

Reason for taking challenge:

Conservation of species is one of my greatest passions. From growing up birdwatching, monitoring of house martins, graduating university with a Wildlife Conservation BSc degree, to now working in the water infrastructure field where my role contributes to conserving and protecting listed species and ensuring environmental compliancy. I spent my time growing up; hiking, camping and exploring in Wales, the Lakes and the Peak District. In 2023 I took part as a volunteer for Wildlife ACT's Southern Berg Vulture Project and had such an incredible and inspiring experience, not only witnessing hands-on conservation efforts, but meeting so many like-minded and inspiring individuals who are equally as passionate. Vulture conservation and raising awareness has been my primary enthusiasm for many years now, and only seems the next step would be to take part in this incredible challenge!

I’ve always had a strong connection to sport and the outdoors. Throughout my school years, I was highly active and competitive, particularly excelling in swimming, netball, water polo, and athletics. Sport was a major focus for me during that time, and I thrived in the team environment and personal challenges it brought. Since leaving school, I’ve remained committed to staying fit and strong through regular gym sessions and strength training. I’m taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge because I believe in protecting the wild spaces and iconic species that make Africa so extraordinary. As someone who has dedicated nearly two decades to sharing the magic of this continent with travelers, I’ve seen firsthand how conservation efforts directly impact the future of wildlife and local communities. This challenge is my way of giving back—to help ensure that rhinos, vultures, and other endangered species not only survive but thrive for generations to come. Although I've never formally been diagnosed, I'm pretty sure I have some form of functional ADHD. I can't sit still for long periods of time and need to keep my mind busy with a multitude of things. As a result, I wear several hats:

3. Sharing the spotlight with trauma medicine, is my passion for security and law enforcement. I am currently the SCF/CPF Operations & Patrols coordinator for Midrand Sector 5. We report to the Midrand SAPS Station and are their partners in policing. In addition, I am Head of Security for my neighbourhood, Barbeque Downs, in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, which has several thousand residents. In past years, I have also served on Anti-Poaching Units and led Farm Security (Anti-stock Theft) teams.

4. Last but not least, is my love for everything living and found in nature. Whether it’s diving the ocean, spending time in the bush, or walking pangolins going through rehabilitation, I want to see/help/save everything and anything!

An old friend who has also signed up for the challenge suggested I partake. I'm a bit concerned as to his motivation for getting me involved-I think he may still be upset that I swamped his boat at Jozini dam years ago and it almost sank-with him in it. I think I peaked athletically when I made it to the semi-finals of my hockey club beer pong tournament back in 2002. Haha, but in all seriousness, while I may not be in the same league as some of the ultra-runners who’ve tackled this event, health and fitness have always been an important part of my life. Whether it’s time in the gym, a run, or anything that gets me moving, I’ve always found joy in staying active. I naturally prefer being off the beaten track — give me a trail run over a road run any day. Some of my most challenging (and memorable) experiences have been the three Mnweni Marathons I’ve completed. It’s a truly magnificent but demanding event, where I’ve faced it all: breathtaking scenery, snow, rain, sun, and ITB.

I thought I was getting a free weekend in the Drakensberg - now they’re telling me I have to run up a mountain and raise a bunch of money ??. Sport has always been a big part of my life. I started with waterpolo in school, then moved into endurance sports: triathlons, Ironman, multiday mountain biking, the occasional marathon and a few trail runs in between. While I’m no stranger to pushing myself, the Rhino Peak Challenge is a different beast, it’s steep, high-altitude, and rugged. But with some training (and probably some heavy breathing), I’ll get there.

Being an avid outdoor adventurer & enthusiast, I understand the important role we have in protecting nature for future generations to come. Having travelled extensively, I have always known Africa as home, and I love sharing a piece of that with my guests. I live with the "You Only Live Once" philosophy, and I am constantly adding things to my bucket-list, some items more crazy than others.

I am not sporty in the definitive sense - I love being out and about walking in nature, with a couple of multi-day hikes in the Drakensberg Mountain Range being fond memories. This year I have been focusing on early morning swims in Midmar Dam, which has become more of a challenge during the Autumn months as the temperature has cooled. I have replaced my mermaid tail for legs, and have begun walking in the evenings to build up endurance for the Rhino Challenge, and I am working on my balance with yoga practice.

* I would like to prove to myself that being 'middle aged' is a state of mind, and I would still like to accomplish great things as I get older, proving to my daughters that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. * Raising funds for the Endangered Wildlife Trust is an added bonus, as I believe in the work they do preserving our African wildlife lures our guests to the African Continent. * The first 6 years of our married life was spent in the Southern Drakensberg foothills, and we have a family photo with each daughter aged 6 months with the Rhino Peak in the backdrop - I can't wait to look at those photos and say: "I summited that peak in one day!"

I want her to grow up knowing that even small actions can have a big impact, and that when you set your mind to something difficult, you come out stronger on the other side. This run is about more than personal challenges, our wildlife is facing unprecedented challenges in this day and age, any contribution to bringing awareness or raising funds will shine a spotlight both on the good that people do in this area, and how wildlife is being completely overrun due to people's ignorance and greediness!!

A husband, father, and everyday man turned adversity into action and continues to inspire with every kilometer he runs. Twelve years ago, Lucky Gordy's life looked very different. But five operations in one year changed everything. What began as a health scare became a mission-a purpose-driven life of ultra-marathons, and a deep commitment to giving back. Before the turning point, life was good. A bit of squash here an there, a career ticking along and no real sense that anything was amiss. But under the surface, there were signs. A family history of heart disease and the silent weight of stress loomed. Still, the urgency to make a change hadn't quite taken hold. "My mum taught me about eternal optimism, he reflects, "and while my mental state was solid, it took five operations in one year to realise I wasn't immortal.* At age 40, reality hit hard. The surgeries weren't just physical wake-up calls-they were life-altering moments that brought everything into sharp focus. *I'd seen my dad have a quadruple bypass at the age of 53 and still thought it was a lifetime away. Then came what Gordon jokingly refers to as his "Healthy Midlife Crisis". But there was nothing midlife about the lessons he learned. 'I regret not discovering the power of giving back earlier," he says. 'But better late than never, right?" When Gordon was just 32, his father passed away before meeting his second granddaughter. He has only three photographs of his ded with his eldest child. "That breaks my heart," he admits. "I want to be heathy enough to walk both my girls down the aisle-and be a great-grandfather someday." Then came another profound loss. Watching his mum battle leukemia was, in his words, heartbreaking but it awoke a dragon inside me." Her courage and strength inspired him to dig deep and transform his life completely. The mission became clear: to live a life of experience, health, purpose, and impact. From couch to Comrades, his journey began not with a grand plan, but a decision to support a friend and the wonderful work The Cows do for childhood cancer. Delene Mulley was raising money for Children with Cancer and signed up for a half-ironman. "I joined her and KZN Herd, but she sadly lost her battle to cancer in 2016. 1 needed a training partner, and Deon van Niekerk became that guy. We later did a marathon together -his droam." From that point on, the goals got bigger, the causes more meaningful, and the challenges more intense. "Running changed my inner voice,* he says. "It showed me that the human body is capable of far more than we believe." But it wasn't just about crossing the finish lines-it was about consistency, accountability, and courage. "Fear of failure kept me showing up,' he says, "and knowing I was doing it for someone else gave it greater meaning."

Sporting bio:

Gordy has completed over 7000 kilometers in competitions over the past 12 years. Amongst the toughest feats? Riding the 106km Amashova on a 65kg ice-cream bicycle and completing the 50km Mont-Aux-Sources trail run -a brutal 11.5-hour endurance test. "That one broke me," he admits. "I thought of everyone I knew who'd lost their battle with cancer. I ran for them." This year Gordy is doing Comrades Ultra Marathon 90km, Run for Rangers - Babanango 100km, Rhino Peak Challenge and Glencairn Trail run. He has also done Amashova on just about every conceivable wheeled bicycle, a road bike, a mountain bike, Tandem with both his daughters, an ice cream bike, Handcycle twice and BMX Twice. This year he will be doing it on an ElliptiGO bike and hopefully on a unicycle or penny farthing next year to finish it all off.

Reason for taking challenge:

This will be Gordy's 3rd Rhino Peak Challenge because he believes in the cause and it is an utter honor to run in this World Heritage site for Endangered Wildlife Trust. Gordy says "the event is so well organized and you are treated like royalty. It's a tough challenge but the view from the top is unrivalled"

About me:

I was born in Johannesburg but became a proud Capetonian around the age of 6. My family and I spent several happy years in the Mother City but moved to the U.K.following my cancer diagnosis. Fortunately, we were able to return home together 5 years later and continue to enjoy everything South Africa has to offer. I pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree after having zero clue about what I wanted to do and the kind of career I wished to pursue. I then stumbled into an internship copywriting for a well-known luxury safari company and have pursued writing and social media ever since. With an avid love for travel and the African continent, I feel it's been a perfect match. Outside of my work life, I'm a well-known coffee enthusiast amongst my friends and family, enjoy walks or fun hikes (especially when they lead to coffee), and love venturing off on spontaneous trips or deciding to bungee jump on a whim - did I mention I'm not a fan of heights?

Having been an avid horse rider from the age of 3 when I demanded lessons from a yard owner in Johannesburg, I pursued that path for many years competing in Western Province competitions, and even the South African Championships in KZN. Following the loss of my horse, I spent a while wondering what I would do next, which is when running found me. After a slightly tumultuous journey, I have now run several half marathons and find running one of my favourite ways to switch off my mind - and somehow, at the same time, work through anything that's bothering me.

Reason for taking challenge:

Conservation and the continued preservation of our planet and wildlife has always been important to me. I was fortunate enough as a child to have adventurous parents who whisked us off into the bush, particularly Kruger National Park, and could not have imagined a better way to grow up. It's my wish that the generations to come will have the opportunity to witness the magic of Africa and its wildlife in a similar way, with as many of the same species as possible. As a secondary point, I've struggled with various health issues throughout my life and make it a personal mission to take on things that would challenge me both mentally and physically, which I have no doubt RPC will. To me, it's exciting to rise to a challenge while doing so for an incredibly meaningful and important cause.

Born in Zimbabwe, raised in Joburg and East London, with pitstops in Tanzania, Stellenbosch and New York — Cape Town is where I’ve finally found home. I love travel, adventure, trying new things, and find joy in pushing myself outside my comfort zone. I feel most alive when I’m surrounded by nature, the ocean, or dogs (preferably all three). I’m an avid tea drinker, big foodie, self-proclaimed carrot cake queen, and believe that nothing beats a good playlist, and the smell of the sea. I have an irrational fear of fish and water where I can’t see my feet. Thankfully, during RPC, I won’t have to face either.

I never quite clicked with traditional sports growing up, but I’ve danced since I was three and recently fallen back in love with it. These days, you’ll find me switching between my running and dance shoes. I’ve completed multiple half marathons and recently challenged myself to the UTCT 35km. Movement has become a celebration, and I’ve fully embraced being a "yes" girl when it comes to a challenge. After all, being able to move our bodies is one of life’s greatest privileges.

Reason for taking challenge:

This challenge brings together everything I care deeply about; nature, conservation, wildlife, and doing something meaningful with this one wild and precious life. Taking it on allows me to give back to something so much bigger than myself and to honour the wild places and animals that have given me so much joy. I want my future children, and generations to come, to experience the same magic I’ve been lucky enough to witness. These animals and wild places deserve our love, respect, and protection. Conservation isn’t just important, it’s essential, and this is my small way of contributing to that bigger picture.
