I have been married now to my husband for 15 years. We live in Basel, Switzerland. We have a 14 year-old daughter, Emma, who has developed our love for travel and inspires us to do what we can to make the world a better place for her to explore and live in.  We want her to think of herself as a world citizen and try to set that example—not just for her sake but for that of future generations

Sporting bio:

I love running, biking and hiking. I've completed several half marathons over the years and even a full marathon. I have also been lucky enough to participate in Rhino Peak the last two years.

Reason for taking challenge:

Since 2019, I’ve been volunteering with Wildlife ACT. I’ve returned year after year, sometimes even twice in one year, and have had the privilege of sharing this experience with both my husband and daughter. Volunteering alongside dedicated monitors, park staff, anti-poaching units, and reserve vets has given me a real understanding of what conservation looks like on the ground—and how vital this work truly is. That’s why I’m taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge. I believe in leading by example. That actions speak louder than words. That every act of kindness sparks another. And most importantly, I want to show my daughter, Emma, that by working together, we really can make a difference. Through this challenge, my goal is not only to reach my fundraising target—but to raise awareness for Wildlife ACT’s incredible work. I want to encourage others to get involved in any way they can. Because no contribution is too small. And our planet is far too precious to lose another species to extinction. Thank you for supporting this cause—it means the world

About me:

I grew up in Pretoria and come from a family that loves Africa and loves to travel. I have worked for the EWT for 9 years and am extremely proud to be part of an organisation that works day in and day out to save species, conserve habitats and benefit people. After over 50 years of conservation impact, we are taking on a bold new strategy. We have identified nine priority landscapes across East and southern Africa that will benefit from targeted conservation action, to become a haven for conservation, climate change adaptation and ecological resilience in a rapidly changing world. I love being outdoors and enjoy running to stay healthy. I have a beautiful eleven-year-old boy, and I hope to instill my sense of hope and appreciation for our beautiful country in him.

We are celebrating 10 years of RPC, and this will mark my 7th year participating in this incredibly successful fundraising event. RPC is a life-changing experience. Our family is Ed, Isabel and my running partner, Phillip.  Our running team has recently been joined by Robyn, who shares our love of nature.  We represent an intentional legacy of nature lovers.  Growing up on a farm teaches you appreciation and respect for your animals, the land and its people.  It's something Ed and I work at in our suburban home where sustainability is key, you are part of a community, do your part.  We have been blessed with a lovely plantation, with sections of natural forest nearby and a stream runs through it.  Everything is solved with a run in the forest with the dogs and, in Robyn’s case, a run on the farm past the cows.  Robyn will be studying conservation ecology in the coming year and is excited to start this journey by contributing to this wonderful initiative that is the Rhino Peak Challenge.

You can do anything on a Kalahari farm, bar swim! It's this freedom of expression that allows you the ability to appreciate any sport may it be for the jol or competitive. Phillip enjoys being part of a team but also the joy of individual sports and endeavours. Robyn loves all sports and is always up for a good challenge.

Reason for taking challenge:

Returning from Weenen Nature Reserve, one of many trips where Phillip has spent time in nature, he spoke of an unforgettable weekend. Robyn also spoke so enthusiastically of her time volunteering in the bush. That's the impact of nature when you experience the multiplicity of the web of life. Though, these experiences were different. They were facilitated by passionate conservationists and generous donors. They do it because they LOVE IT! Such generosity of spirit. Education and awareness of our diversely beautiful country is becoming more important as so much is being eroded by the Spirit of Greed and the lack of knowledge. The conservationists at Wildlife ACT are fighting this scourge daily and they need our help. The Rhino Peak Challenge fundraising conservation initiative, now in its 10th year, allows Phillip, Robyn and me the privilege of trail running in the picturesque Drakensburg, to ascend the Rhino's Peak. It also gives us the opportunity to reach out, work hard and offer something back for which we have received so generously.

As a passionate nature lover and having grown to understand how important nature is to our wellbeing, In order to survive as a species we need to protect all of our natural biodiversity. Born in Zimbabwe. Living in S.Africa most of my life. Grown up with sport and an outdoor life. Swimming was my first fairly serious sport, but then I found the sport of Squash. Excelled from a young age and stuck to my dream of playing professionally on the world tour. As soon as school finished I embarked on the PSA World Tour for 12 years. Privileged to have played Squash all over the world. During my sporting career I also had a passion for endangered wildlife conservation. Wanting to make an even bigger impact for endangered wildlife and community upliftement, I established our own Non-Profit Company. My daughter Sarah who is a vet, is an important part of our NPC and we are making inroads to assist in niche projects on the wildlife, rural community and bio diversity side. " Together we will make tomorrow better than today " I'm still competing in the squash arena but impacting endangered wildlife and communities in a positive way I think is my calling.

For many years I have had a big passion to make a difference. Melissa: I’m a very busy mom of 3. I embrace living life to the fullest, experiencing new things and trying something at least once! I have such an interest in the environment so much so that my husband and I own and operate Alien Tree Solutions. When I am not working or taking care of my family, I am usually walking up the mountain and spending time in nature – it refreshes the soul.

Melissa: I have always enjoyed maintaining a level of fitness and health, more recently with hiking – I find it both challenging and therapeutic.

Meg: As a child, my parents would take us hiking every weekend in the Kogelberg Mountains above Kleinmond. We absolutely loved it and as a teenager, we enjoyed a little wooden cabin in the Cederberg Mountains (I have to confess, not much hiking but more sleeping was done). Currently, I am based along the Garden Route and exploring the George mountains have brought back this childhood passion of hiking. I have also been a runner throughout my life - not a very good or dedicated one but I do love a good run. I'm out to conquer the 6 peaks in George (a personal goal) and then onto the Rhino Peak Challenge.

Melissa: I always love a good challenge! When my friend, Meg from Go2Africa, suggested we do the Rhino Peak, I couldn't say no. I’m super exited for this personal challenge but likewise, I feel truly honoured to help raise awareness and funds for wildlife conservation! Having grown up in a very active and adventurous family, I fell in love with nature and the mountains at a young age. I am happiest when I am deep in a mountain somewhere. I am a conservationist and am dedicated to biodiversity awareness, connecting people to nature and protecting landscapes and species through my work at the Endangered Wildlife Trust. I am also a foodie who loves baking. I live in Cape Town with my husband and our two crazy Jack Russells.

Sporting bio:

All things mountaineering: I have been a rock climber for the last 19 years, and regularly climb with my husband on Table Mountain or the Cederberg (wherever there is suitable rock!) I regularly hike - the more off-trail the better. I trail run most weekends and LOVE running downhill. In summer I do kloofing (canyoneering) in many of the Cape's secluded kloofs. And I walk the dogs daily - does that count?

Reason for taking challenge:

I am a passionate conservationist and have been working in the NGO space for over a decade. I understand the need to constantly fundraise for the important work that we all do. I want to help in whatever way I can and if it means hiking in the Drakensberg then I am in! Globally, we are facing geopolitical instability and increasing pressures on biodiversity - there is an urgent need for greater awareness around species and habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. Through taking part in RPC, I am able to play a part in raising that awareness and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity.

About me:

I spent part of my childhood in Katima Mulilo on Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, where I learned how to tiger fish and spent most days covered in mud – usually in my underpants. These days I’m a little more clothed, but no less adventurous. I work as a Leads Associate and recharge by cold dipping in the ocean, going full tilt at F45, and dancing barefoot under the stars at festivals. I’m a free spirit with a paintbrush in one hand, a bird book in the other, and a thriving collection of houseplants plotting a quiet takeover in the background. In another life? Probably a monkey. Obviously.

Sporting bio:

Whether it’s gym, trail races, or multi-day charity cycles through Namibia, I’ve always loved a good physical challenge – especially if it includes beautiful views and the occasional stumble. I’ve taken part in Challenge4ACause, the Knysna Forest Race, as well as countless runs and hikes around Cape Town. Movement keeps me grounded, energised, and alive (preferably with a good playlist).

Reason for taking challenge:

I’ve had my eye on the Rhino Peak Challenge since it first launched but thought I’d join “next year.” When a fellow participant had to step down, I offered to take her place – and suddenly “next year” became now. I’m nervous, but also wildly excited to push my limits alongside an inspiring group of humans.

Having previously raised funds for rhino conservation through Challenge4ACause, I’ve seen the impact these initiatives can make. It’s an honour to take on another adventure in support of these magnificent, threatened animals. I am a very active person and have been playing squash, tennis, golf, cricket and touch rugby (after I gave up contact rugby in my late twenties) my whole life. I run at least 20km a week to keep fit in general and I am an avid hiker.

Reason for taking challenge:

As a senior staff member of the EWT I want to take on this challenge to both kead by example in my work environment and challenge myself personally. I am confident that with some focused training I will be able to complete the Rhino Peak challenge in a competitive time. Who knows, it may become a regular annual challenge for me. And of course I want to raise as much funding for the EWT as possible!

About me:

I’m a 28-year-old daughter & mother, born and raised in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands – a region that shaped my deep love for nature and the outdoors. Surrounded by diverse landscapes growing up, I naturally gravitated towards exploring the environment, which eventually sparked my passion for hiking and outdoor education. I’m an Environmental Scientist by qualification, with a strong passion for sustainability, rural development and biodiversity conservation. I currently work as a Project Coordinator at Rhino Africa where as part of our CSR wildlife conservation isn’t just something we do for the books – it’s part of our DNA. Prior to this, i was an environmental education intern at WESSA, where I played a key role in equipping school learners with knowledge and skills around biodiversity and sustainability. I’ve since led numerous hikes for youth as part of the President’s Award, helping them connect with nature while building confidence and leadership skills. When I’m not out on a trail, you’ll probably find me debating thought-provoking topics or singing with friends over a glass of beer. I believe in living with purpose, staying curious and using every opportunity to inspire change – one step at a time.

My sporting journey began in high school, where I was an active participant in both netball and soccer. While I’ve always been a passionate soccer fan – and still am to this day – my true sporting love emerged after school: HIKING. Hiking quickly became more than just a physical activity for me – it became my way of connecting with nature, finding balance and staying active. Today, I occasionally lead hikes for school groups and facilitate outdoor education experiences.

About me:

I am Malibongwe Sibiya, and I am the Wildlife ACT Southern Berg Project Vulture Monitor. My daily work involves the monitoring of Endangered and Critically endangered Vultures in Southern Drakensberg and Lesotho. My work also includes the monitoring of Bearded Vulture nests during the breeding season and the monitoring and management of Long-term camera trap surveys in the Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site and surroundings, I also help with the Environmental Education and awareness programs with local schools and providing of safe food for the endangered vultures at the Mzimkulu Vulture Hide and Safe Feeding Site in Underberg.

Rhino Peak Challenge is such a great initiative which I am very proud to be part of. Such events also needs everyone's support because they promote Wildlife Conservation and celebrate the beauty of our planet. About me:

I’m a husband, a dad, and have a sense of humour that seems to cut through all of me, no matter how professional I should be. I am a creative who spends most days behind a computer in Johannesburg, which makes getting outdoors feel that much more valuable. I try to get to the mountains whenever I can, but it’s not nearly as often as I’d like. Still, every time I manage to hit the trails, it’s always worth it. Doesn’t matter how bad the day’s been, being out there just resets things. I once heard or saw on an IG reel that you will never regret going on a run. My family is everything. I want to be a good role model for my kids, to show them that it’s okay, and we should all try to chase hard things, as well as that doing something uncomfortable can lead to something meaningful. Conservation is a big part of my extended family, and I’ve always felt like I needed to step into that space too. We weren’t here first, and we won’t be here last, but we are here now, so we may as well take better care of what’s around us. Fun Fact: I have some weird superstitious sports habits. I keep certain pairs of socks for specific days because they’ve got good energy. And yes, my shoelaces get tied and tucked in specific ways before certain runs. Call it weird. Or just habit. Either way, it helps me.

Sporting bio:

I love all things to do with activity and getting out there. I’ve played hockey for about 20 years straight, never missing a season. I used to be pretty decent on a mountain bike, it was a huge part of my life for a long time. And while I don’t train as much as I should these days, running has managed to stick around. I’ve done a bunch of halfs, a couple of 32s, a few full marathons, and an ultra trail. I once accidentally won a short trail race too… which was a bit wild, but very cool. My biggest running challenge so far was MAD2Run in 2021, a relay from Joburg to Cape Town. One of the toughest shifts was in the Tankwa: midday heat, heavy wind, and a seriously tired body after days on the road. It wasn’t fun, but it was brilliant. Heading into Rhino Peak, I just want to be fit enough to give it the beans when I need to, but still comfortable enough to take a moment, breathe, and be fully present in the mountains.

Reason for taking challenge:

This challenge is about doing more than talking. Likes and shares don’t help a rhino that’s being poached, or vultures that have been poisoned. But raising funds, actually showing up, does. If I can do that by running up a mountain, then I’m in. One of my best mates (grown men should really say that more often), Henry Cock, who’s also doing the challenge, is one of those people who just commits and makes it happen. It’s a quality I deeply admire. He asked, and I said yes. Simple as that. We should definitely do this. There wasn’t some big click or emotional turning point. It may sound odd, but sometimes something just feels correct. No second-guessing. No “should I or shouldn’t I.” Just a quiet, matter-of-fact yes. Like it was always going to happen. And that is what the Rhino Peak Challenge is to me, something that is correct.

About me:

From a small village in Leicestershire in the UK, I've grown up around wildlife; looking for it on daily walks, and identifying what's flying above my head and running around at my feet. I can't imagine my life where wildlife conservation and the great outdoors aren't at the soul of my focus. I was lucky enough to meet many amazing people from Wildlife ACT in August 2023 on my volunteering trip at the Southern Berg Vulture Project, and have irrevocably fallen in love with the Drakensberg area since then.

Sporting bio:

Avid solo hiker, camper and woodland explorer. I've completed both my Bronze and Silver DofE awards. Love spending my fitness time in the outdoors, from leisurely paddleboarding and kayaking, to hikes such as Snowdon, Tryfan and Bamboo mountain or 10k trail runs. The last few months I've been focusing on more strength training at the gym with rowing machines, stair master and treadmill exercises.

Reason for taking challenge:

Conservation of species is one of my greatest passions. From growing up birdwatching, monitoring of house martins, graduating university with a Wildlife Conservation BSc degree, to now working in the water infrastructure field where my role contributes to conserving and protecting listed species and ensuring environmental compliancy. I spent my time growing up; hiking, camping and exploring in Wales, the Lakes and the Peak District. In 2023 I took part as a volunteer for Wildlife ACT's Southern Berg Vulture Project and had such an incredible and inspiring experience, not only witnessing hands-on conservation efforts, but meeting so many like-minded and inspiring individuals who are equally as passionate. Vulture conservation and raising awareness has been my primary enthusiasm for many years now, and only seems the next step would be to take part in this incredible challenge!

Whether I'm planning a once-in-a-lifetime safari or setting off on our next family adventure, I’m constantly inspired by Africa’s wild beauty, diverse cultures, and the meaningful connections we make along the way. I’ve always had a strong connection to sport and the outdoors. Throughout my school years, I was highly active and competitive, particularly excelling in swimming, netball, water polo, and athletics. Sport was a major focus for me during that time, and I thrived in the team environment and personal challenges it brought. Since leaving school, I’ve remained committed to staying fit and strong through regular gym sessions and strength training. I’ve also pursued my love for the outdoors with experiences like hiking Lion’s Head, completing the Otter Trail, and trekking to see the mountain gorillas in Uganda. Being active in nature is where I feel most alive—it fuels both my body and my spirit.

I’m taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge because I believe in protecting the wild spaces and iconic species that make Africa so extraordinary. As someone who has dedicated nearly two decades to sharing the magic of this continent with travelers, I’ve seen firsthand how conservation efforts directly impact the future of wildlife and local communities. This challenge is my way of giving back—to help ensure that rhinos, vultures, and other endangered species not only survive but thrive for generations to come. It’s also a personal journey for me, as a mom and adventurer, to push my own limits for a cause I care deeply about.

I am a son, brother, husband, and father.

Although I've never formally been diagnosed, I'm pretty sure I have some form of functional ADHD. I can't sit still for long periods of time and need to keep my mind busy with a multitude of things. As a result, I wear several hats:

1. My main source of income comes from my own business, africaMASSIVE. In short, we do conferencing, events, and travel, with a focus on ecology related and academic projects. Website: https://africamassive.co.za/

2. One of my main passions in life is trauma medicine. I am a first responder in the greater Midrand (Johannesburg) area and also share the knowledge as a Stop the Bleed instructor (https://www.stopthebleed.org/) which is accredited through the American College of Surgeons, and is owned by the American Department of the Defense.

3. Sharing the spotlight with trauma medicine, is my passion for security and law enforcement. I am currently the SCF/CPF Operations & Patrols coordinator for Midrand Sector 5. We report to the Midrand SAPS Station and are their partners in policing. In addition, I am Head of Security for my neighbourhood, Barbeque Downs, in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, which has several thousand residents. In past years, I have also served on Anti-Poaching Units and led Farm Security (Anti-stock Theft) teams.

4. Last but not least, is my love for everything living and found in nature. Whether it’s diving the ocean, spending time in the bush, or walking pangolins going through rehabilitation, I want to see/help/save everything and anything!

I have been active and done sport from the moment I could walk. For me, besides the obvious health benefits, sport teaches discipline and allows you to meet many people from all walks of life. In high-school, I did almost every sport our school offered, and by the end of matric, was part of several 1st teams. I also represented KZN in some of these sports. Nowadays, I do whatever I can to stay active... From hiking, rock-climbing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, to golf, padel, and swimming (to name a few), I'm keen to do it!

An old friend who has also signed up for the challenge suggested I partake. I'm a bit concerned as to his motivation for getting me involved-I think he may still be upset that I swamped his boat at Jozini dam years ago and it almost sank-with him in it. Be that as it may it's an opportunity to experience an unspoiled part of our beautiful country with like-minded people whilst getting out of my comfort zone and at the same time raising some much needed funds for projects that are trying to protect what is left of our natural heritage.

Staying active has always been part of who I am. I’ve run a few half marathons, taken on some cycle races, and now keep fit with regular bootcamp sessions and social padel matches. When my good friend (and fellow bootcamp and padel partner) told me about this challenge, I knew there was more behind it than just his love for nature, he probably just wants someone to help drag him across the finish line! Originally from Durban, I grew up in Pretoria (fondly known as the Jacaranda City) where I completed both my high school and university education. Upon returning home, I immersed myself in the African bush, joining Singita Private Game Reserves as a relief Camp Manager. That experience deepened my connection with nature and conservation. Eventually, I followed my dream to Cape Town, becoming a Western Cape Tour Guide and later an Africa Safari Expert. Today, I curate luxury safari itineraries across the continent, having explored over 10 African countries. Beyond my professional life, I’m a proud wife and mom, deeply passionate about health, wellness, and personal growth.

My health and fitness journey has been one of resilience, transformation, and deep personal growth. While I enjoyed sport during my school years, I never truly excelled or felt confident in my abilities. It’s only now, in my 30s, that I can proudly say fitness and wellness have become central to my life. For years, I battled with body image and carried the weight (physically and emotionally) of failed diets, quick fixes, and negative self-talk. Having worked in the safari and tourism industry for most of my adult life, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing Africa’s wildlife in its raw beauty but I’ve also seen the devastating reality of poaching. I’ve stood in silence, heartbroken, before the bodies of rhinos slaughtered for their horns. That grief fuels my determination to be part of the solution. I’m passionate about wildlife, staying active, and living a healthy, nature-connected life wherever I go. I am also very keen on giving back to the natural world from which I get so much joy.

Sporting bio:

I think I peaked athletically when I made it to the semi-finals of my hockey club beer pong tournament back in 2002. Haha, but in all seriousness, while I may not be in the same league as some of the ultra-runners who’ve tackled this event, health and fitness have always been an important part of my life. Whether it’s time in the gym, a run, or anything that gets me moving, I’ve always found joy in staying active. I naturally prefer being off the beaten track — give me a trail run over a road run any day. Some of my most challenging (and memorable) experiences have been the three Mnweni Marathons I’ve completed. It’s a truly magnificent but demanding event, where I’ve faced it all: breathtaking scenery, snow, rain, sun, and ITB.

I thought I was getting a free weekend in the Drakensberg - now they’re telling me I have to run up a mountain and raise a bunch of money ??. Just joking, in all seriousness, this type of challenge fits my personality and passions perfectly. I love trail running and hiking, I love being out in nature and in the Berg, and I have a deep appreciation for wildlife and wild places. Spending time in natural environments with wild animals brings me a lot of joy, and the opportunity to take part in this event while supporting the incredible work that the beneficiaries are doing is an absolute privilege. If I can contribute, even in a small way, to protecting endangered animals, then every step will be worth it.

Hi, I’m Faye, and this year I’m taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge, a tough but meaningful hike up Rhino Peak (3,056m) in the beautiful Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site, all in support of wildlife conservation. I work in the world of medical sales, and outside of work I would describe myself as determined, fun-loving and always up for an adventure.

Sporting bio:

Sport has always been a big part of my life. I started with waterpolo in school, then moved into endurance sports: triathlons, Ironman, multiday mountain biking, the occasional marathon and a few trail runs in between. While I’m no stranger to pushing myself, the Rhino Peak Challenge is a different beast, it’s steep, high-altitude, and rugged. But with some training (and probably some heavy breathing), I’ll get there.

After having a baby near the end of 2024, I found myself looking for something meaningful, something that would challenge me, reconnect me with nature, and give back in the process. I love the bush. There’s nothing quite like the peace, the space, and the raw beauty of the wild, but it’s also a place under pressure. Without active conservation efforts, we risk losing the very animals and ecosystems that make it so special. I want my child to grow up in a world where they can see a rhino in the wild, not just read about them in storybooks. That future doesn’t happen by chance; it happens because people fight for it.
